The “cubit” is the unit that gained the most attention out of the hand-based length measurements introduced in the previous section. In the ancient Orient, the length of a king’s elbow was used and it was changed every time there was a new king. The seated figure of the Sumerian king, Gudea dating back to 2,170 BC, is the oldest public item that still exists today.
