Similarities with the modern mile
Length of two steps by soldiers in the eras of ancient Greece and Rome. The Latin word of “passus” is equivalent to the English word, “pace”. The “mille passus”, which is one-thousand times one passus, is called a “miliarium” and this word is said to be the origin of the modern-day “mile”.
