The IEEE Milestone Program recognizes historically significant achievements in the development of groundbreaking industrial technologies. This IEEE Milestone reflects the long-standing contribution of Hitachi's electron microscopy to communities and the advancement of industry. The Hitachi Group wishes to express its gratitude to the professors at universities and national research institutions for their advice, as well as many other stakeholders, including customers around the world who have helped to nurture Hitachi's products. To live up to the recognition we have received from the IEEE, the Hitachi Group's researchers and technicians will continue to work together on R&D and product development, with the view to helping to build a more reliable, safer, and more comfortable society while contributing to the advancement of industry worldwide.

Hitachi, Ltd. and Hitachi High-Technologies Corporation are greatly honored to receive the prestigious IEEE Milestone for the“ First Practical Field Emission Electron Microscope, 1972.” Hitachi High-Technologies was formed through the merger in 2001 of Nissei Sangyo Co., Ltd., a Hitachi Group trading company specializing in cutting-edge technology, and the Instruments Group and Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment Group of Hitachi, Ltd.

From the years of our forerunners, our history has been inseparable from the development of electron microscopy in Japan over the past 70 years. This honorable IEEE Milestone recognizes our tireless efforts to improve analytical technologies using electron microscopes.
