There are a number of strange stories behind the birth of the yard, such as it originating from “the length spanning the tip of Henry I’s nose to the tip of the thumb of his extended arm” and “the hip measurement of an Anglo-Saxon”. It is thought that it possibly originates from two cubits or three feet.
