The yen was first used in 1871. How it got the name “yen”, which means “circle” in Japanese, is actually a mystery. At a meeting to decide the new currency system, Shigenobu Okuma apparently said, “if you make a circle with your thumb and index finger, even a three-year-old child will know that it is money”, but it is unclear for certain whether this is true or not.
