Symbol: $ (dollar), ¢ (cent) / Base data: currency
United States of America National currency unit. When we just say “dollar”, this usually means the American dollar.
First used in 1792
The dollar and cent system was established under the Coinage Act in 1792. The origin of the word, “dollar”, apparently comes from a silver coin called a “thaler” that was in circulation in Europe. The “cent” is a subsidiary currency, and 100 of them make up a dollar. The word “penny” that we hear sometimes is a common name for a 1 cent coin.
