This unit originated from the width of a thumb just like an inch. Just like the shaku, its roots can be traced back to ancient China, and its value was set at 10 sun = 1 shaku in the Zhou period. It was used for a long time before the Taiho Code (701 CE) in Japan, and it was defined as 1/33 m in the Meiji Measurement Regulations.
