In the past, “1 ri takes 1 hour” was common knowledge. The 1 ri decided by the government was 36 cho (about 4 km) and it was the distance that could be walked in 1 hour. However, the definition of 1 ri differed depending on the highway in olden days of Edo. This is because it was decided by walking effort rather than distance.
