Base data: volume
1 go = 180.39 mL. 10 go = 1 sho
We cannot talk about rice or sake without mentioning this unit
Coming to Japan from China together with the “sho”, this unit has passed through many eras. Even now, it is heavily used. The scales on the inside of rice cooker measuring cups are shown in “go”. When you say “ippon tsukete-kure” (give me a sake) at a Japanese izakaya bar, that means “one go” worth of sake. You’re not likely to say, “give me 180 ml of sake”.
