“At-Home Biodiversity Conservation Activity: Swag Making”
The Hitachi High-Tech Group carries out biodiversity conservation activities in the Tokyo metropolitan area, including forest maintenance and insect hotel installation at the Takao Forest Nature School operated by the SEVEN-ELEVEN FOUNDATION. To give opportunities for those unable to participate on-site to learn about our biodiversity conservation efforts and engage with nature, the Sustainability Management Department in Hitachi High-Tech’s CSR Division has created “Biodiversity Conservation Activities That Can Be Done at Home.”
Following our early June activity, we conducted at-home swag-making using items like tree branches and pinecones collected on-site, with voluntary participation from colleagues in Japan. A swag is a wall decoration created by bundling natural materials such as flowers, leaves, and berries. In Europe, swags have long been valued as decorations to ward off evil and attract good fortune.
We received many applications from Hitachi High-Tech Group members across Japan, and we sent craft kits to about 50 participants who made swags with their families. We got great feedback, including photos of finished swags. Players from the Cougars women's basketball team also participated in the activity.
By creating swags from natural materials collected at our forest maintenance site, we hope this activity provided an opportunity to reflect on “the relationship between natural forests and people” and “forest biodiversity and its importance.”
The Sustainability Management Department will continue to plan biodiversity conservation activities, including online programs, to allow wide participation from our members both on-site and at home.
