Hitachi High-Tech Members Take Part in a Hands-on Rice-Planting Event
As part of the Hitachi High-Tech Group’s carbon neutrality efforts, a hands-on rice-planting event was held on Saturday, May 23, with the kind cooperation of farmers in Ibaraki Prefecture. Colleagues from Hitachi, Ltd. joined members of the Hitachi High-Tech Group, making this a One Hitachi initiative.
The aim is twofold: to curb methane emissions through midseason drainage management in paddy fields, thereby generating Scope 1 credits*, and to contribute to local agriculture.
On the day of the event, participating employees waded into the paddy fields and carefully planted rice seedlings by hand, one bunch at a time. The unfamiliar footing took some getting used to, but working directly with the soil and water in nature gave participants a firsthand appreciation of the care and effort that farming requires. It also provided a valuable opportunity to learn about the connection between decarbonization efforts and local agriculture while experiencing the importance of living in harmony with nature.
The unfamiliar footing took some getting used to, but working directly with the soil and water in nature gave everyone a tangible sense of how much care farming demands and how much it matters.
Beyond its contribution to mitigating climate change through greenhouse gas reduction, this initiative also fosters harmony with nature and strengthens collaboration with local communities through partnerships with regional agriculture. By learning firsthand in the field, employees deepen their understanding of sustainability and are encouraged to translate that learning into action in their daily work.
The Hitachi High-Tech Group will continue generating and using Scope 1 credits while deepening its partnerships with local communities, contributing to a more sustainable society.
* Scope 1 credits are a mechanism for offsetting the CO2 a company emits directly from its own facilities and vehicles (Scope 1)—the portion that cannot be eliminated through reduction alone—with emission reductions (credits) achieved elsewhere.
