Making a Christmas Wreath: Biodiversity & Conservation Activity for the Home

The Hitachi High-Tech Group conducts biodiversity conservation activities, including forest maintenance and the installation of the insect hotel at the Takao Forest Nature School, operated by the SEVEN-ELEVEN FOUNATION. To help colleagues and their families who couldn’t participate in on-site activities learn about the Hitachi High-Tech Group’s biodiversity conservation efforts and connect with nature, the Sustainability Management Department of CSR Division has been organizing “At-Home Biodiversity Conservation Activities.”

Following forest maintenance work and biodiversity conservation activities in early October, we organized a Christmas wreath-making event for interested colleagues across Japan, using kudzu vines, pinecones, and other materials collected on-site.
Christmas wreaths are circular decorations displayed on household doors during the Christmas season. They are typically made from evergreen leaves such as holly and fir and decorated with pinecones, bells, ribbons, and other ornaments.

We received more applications than our capacity could accommodate from group members across Japan, and we sent wreath-making kits to 56 participants, who created the wreaths together with their families. The kits generated an enthusiastic response, with participants sharing photos of their completed Christmas wreaths and pictures from the crafting process.
We hope that creating Christmas wreaths from natural materials collected at the forest maintenance site will provide an opportunity to reflect on the relationship between natural forests and people, as well as on biodiversity and the importance of forests.
