Hitachi High-Tech RUS Limited Liability Company and the Russian dealer of TM microscopes held an international exchange event utilizing tabletop microscopes at the Japanese Embassy in Russia on Tuesday, May 29.

It is currently the 'Year of Japan in Russia' so various cultural exchange events are being held, and ours was recognized as one of the official Japanese Embassy projects.

On the day, 33 junior high school students from the Japanese School in Moscow and 40 from Moscow School No. 1223 were divided into teams that were a mixture of Japanese and Russian members. There were some very lively scenes as, thanks to a program that included a quiz using electron microscope images, the members discussed amongst themselves and competed as teams.

A researcher from the State Hermitage Museum was invited as a special guest. We were shown examples where the electron microscope was used to examine the components and age of artworks from the collection, and the methods used in restoration work. The eyes of the Japanese and Russian students sparkled as they looked at the unknown world made visible by the electron microscope.

After the event, we received feedback from the students such as “I could see that the electron microscope is essential for scientific progress”, “I was really glad that we could overcome differences in nationality and put our heads together”, and “I was amazed that by looking at an animal hair through the electron microscope, you can identify the type of animal it came from.”

Embassy staff, members of the Moscow Japan Club and staff from a local mass media company, Sputnik, also came along to watch, and the international exchange event was reported in Sputnik’s Web News (Japanese language edition).
