Hitachi High-Tech held a hybrid science outreach class (combining a remote lecture and a classroom experiment) for five students at a specially designated guidance classroom, “The Tsubasa Classroom (helping students return to school)”, ranging between an elementary school first year to junior high school third year.

The lesson theme was biomimetics, where humans create useful items by copying the structures of living organisms, and featured a yogurt-repelling lid that mimics the structure of the lotus leaf. The pupils tried an experiment in the classroom using commercially available yogurts. They tackled the experiment with enthusiasm, and broke into smiles and cries of amazement when they saw the results.

The feedback we received included the following comments: “I want to see an actual electron microscope now,” “I liked the way familiar items were used for the experiment,” and “It was an ingenious lesson that didn’t stress the children.”

Hitachi High-Tech will continue the science outreach programs to contribute to Materiality 3 “Contributing to the Sustained Development of Science and Industry” of our five materialities.
